Note: I am not bitter nor do I not love the authors. By all means, leave a review for the book whether you love it or not, but attacking another reviewer on their view on the book is NOT okay.I honestly wanted to love this book to bits. I absolutely did. While the Killough Company and the Kings are my favourite series, I do enjoy reading about the ups and downs at City Hall.Mayor Ross Midberry have always been a favourite of mine with his snarky arrogance and ability to grease every palm he meets. Knowing he was getting his own book and having to resolve the fall-out at the end of ‘Denial’ made me a happy gal.Until I read the book and had hoped I misunderstood the blurb. But, this duo manages to take a character that have ONLY been introduced to us as self-assured, arrogant and narcissistic and do a complete 180 on him and make him a submissive? At no point in any of the City Hall books have there even been a hint of this characteristic in this character.I know some authors always enjoy playing around with the characters and not play into expectations, but come on. You honestly want me to believe that Ross Midberry is a sub? And that Stormy is truthfully a Dom? If I would have gotten some foreshadowing of this, I would have believed it. As it stands, it felt like it came completely out of the left field.I could sort of get behind the boy toy play with Ross being the toy, but I honestly cannot get behind him with a safe word and playing the submissive role in a relationship, no matter how short on cash he is. Being called a ‘good boy’?And being a bottom and calling Lane ‘Mister’? It just didn’t seem believable for me from the views I have gotten on his character so far.For the love of everything, give a reader a forewarning before pulling this kind of stunt. I did not find either of the characters believable and for once, I just wanted the book to be over and done, and get on to the next one. Really a sour feeling, when I had been looking forward to this one for what felt like ages. But I will still commend both Gregory and Brightly on their writing, which is absolutely perfect, even if the story and the characters are not (and not because it was meant to be like that). They manage to write explicit scenes and touching scenes with a masterful pen, and that is one of the things that will always bring me back no matter what.I only hope the next co-written book does not delve into the same complete character shift as this one has, if the characters have been introduced to us before. Because I absolutely love the books written by both of these authors in general, and I would hate to not automatically one-click everything.I honestly feel bad for only giving it 2 stars, but not even the writing can save a book where I never felt connected to the characters.I am looking forward to multiple stories in the future: Mark’s, Officer Caro’s (hopefully), Jester and Bliss, Caspar, the whole gang at the Pleasant Beach and everyone else. Lots of good things to come! Okay, so I love Meg and Ki as authors and I am absolutely devoted to the NG world they've created. I've been consumed by the City Hall books and and unbearably high expectations for this book, because it was ROSS. And that's where I've failed as a reader. I had unbearably high expectations. I went into this book with all the knowledge of the characters from prior books and I created my own idea of how this book would play out. My struggle with the review is separating my expectations from the reality.Ross, the arrogant, no ummm... ducks-given, mayor of NG who did whatever he wanted and had Vane, Mark, or others clean up his messes. His fall, in Denial, set the stage for a HUGE story of Ross and his redemption, or freefall into an even worse situation. This book didn't quite hit it. The writing is spectacular, don't get me wrong. The authors do not let you down, in that respect. And the story is really good. I'm not saying it's not. But I think there was some unrealized potential.Domestic Discipline can be a boring kink, no matter how you write it. It's not active like impact play, or intriguingly sexy like bondage, or emotionally engaging like Daddy/boy. Add Humiliation to it, and it's still not exciting. I think that's where this book fell a little flat. There wasn't enough exploration of Ross to support the introduction of these kinks in his character, especially since he'd been portrayed more as an exhibitionist in prior books. There was a missed opportunity for developing his character and diving into his psyche for how he went from exhibitionist/thrill-seeker to the person we see in this book.Something just didn't... connect.... in the book.Lane (Stormy)... now, he's a different story. Intriguing, sexy, surprisingly Dominant for being a Courtesan, possessive, protective, and just a great character. He carried the story! And we get to see more of Mark (yessss... next book!) and some other characters who might be in Mark's book! (I can't wait)So why did I rate 5-star? Because, on its own, it's a great book. Within the context of the other books and the anticipation of Ross' continued character development, I'd rate it lower. But it's not fair to rate a book against anticipation. Looking at the book, by itself, it's amazing, kinky, fun, well written, sexy.Like I said in the title... it was a struggle to review. But read it, enjoy it, and increase your immersion in the NG world!
